IS TALENT OVERRATED?

The formula for success is still not widely known but we can be sure that talent and excellence are not always necessary some of the prerequisites, the world is awash with average yet successful people. It seems to be if you know your talent is severely limited yet you want to succeed the best thing you can do for yourself is to be the humblest of souls, maybe it’s just pure grace from God, maybe muti works after all, I don’t know…
Eddie Zondi, this guy has been on Metro FM, SA’s biggest commercial radio station, for about twenty years now and it’s hard to fathom how and why. This is the guy who’s alleged to hit on some of her female callers off air (I dare you to challenge me to bring evidence), he still says ‘the facebook’, he’s still rude to male callers but I guess the retards deserve it for continuing calling in when he’s made it clear he’s doing it for the ladies. Some will argue, ‘but Eddie plays great music’, forgetting the music compiler selects the music for him.
Aaron Mokoena, the former Bafana captain, the fact that Aaron is the most capped player (104 Bafana ) in Bafana’s history is a real shocker, I can’t think of one thing that Aaron is really good at, but he captained Bafana and played the most number of games. How? God’s grace? Can God deny a deserving person an opportunity just to appease a mediocre soul? Because Aaron playing so many times for Bafana means someone was denied an opportunity to represent his country. But he’s one of the most humble soccer stars you’ll meet.
Proverb, after forty or so tracks he’s given us via three or four albums not even one stands out, not even one was ever a hit, that’s how painfully-average Proverb is, and he also a job on Idols where he stands next to the door and patronize people who can’t sing. How is that for irony? Have you ever heard anyone say, ‘Yho, I need to get Proverb’s album’? I don’t know how then the Kimberley dude has managed to stay afloat this long. How??? See? Talent is not a must, and you wonder why you see those talentless kids trying their luck on Idols, they’ve seen that sometimes the world just decides to embrace mediocrity. Again, Proverb is a nice dude, just like Aaron.
Beyonce, if she had Hlengiwe Mhlaba’s body would Beyonce still sell? Without music videos? But then again she’s not a recording artist but a performing one, and she screams when she sings and may have given hot women with no singing talent false hope. But to be fair to Beyonce she’s not talentless, it’s just that she’s also not really phenomenally talented yet she is phenomenally successful. And did you know that even tabloid journalists can’t find any guys she’s dated, isn’t that phenomenal that the bombshell that she is she never allowed herself to be ‘widely-enjoyed’? I mean many gorgeous but talented women use the ‘people between their legs’ to negotiate for them. Beyonce is another genuinely-beautiful soul.
Generations (the soapie), I have seen some gripping stories on Generations but for the most part you’d think you’re watching a sitcom yet it is the most-watched show on SA television. I have stopped trying to figure out how they do it, people say it’s the timeslot but Scandal tried to take Generations on the same time slot and it was a technical knockout, e-TV regretted it and subsequently moved Scandal to an earlier slot. At 8pm in South Africa EVERYONE watches Generations, it’s far from being a great soap opera but people vote with their remote controls.
I could go on and on about how we embrace mediocrity but you get the point, talent is optional. I mean Loyiso Bala even wins SAMAs! FIVE of them.
Strange, isn’t? But I guess there’s hope for everyone. Perhaps sometimes it’s just about how much you really want it, ‘I’m not talented but I WILL make it’.
Chase your dreams people, it’s possible.
